scheedle:
Our Tradeshow History
It has long been known that the Albury Wodonga Convention Bureau does not hold back when deciding on a theme for its tradeshow activities. In fact, so popular have our themes been that we have been contacted by several regional NSW bureaux to partner them in a display. In recent years we have seen everything from “Dancing Chefs” to our own local game-show host “Hume Highway”. This year will not be any different!
Background
What was thought to have been a conferencing “urban legend” for more than a quarter of a century, the Scheedle will be unveiled nationally at the Albury Wodonga Convention Bureau stand 700 during AIME 2006.
In 1971, conferencing was only an emerging industry in the Albury Wodonga region. Gough Whitlam opened the Travelodge (Country Comfort) in that year just in time to receive a flood of business meeting enquiries. Only new to the position, the events coordinator at the time made a double booking with the Australian Farmers Federation and the Victorian Poodles Association. Understanding the mix up, both conferences went ahead sharing the same facility at the same time.
Starting out as a joke, the idea to combine the qualities of a sheep and a poodle as Australia’s new back yard pet and export quickly spread amongst the delegates. Little have people known that in the last 35 years, a local Charles Sturt University scientist has been quietly working away at this very idea - splicing the genes of these two animals to finally create a new and fun pet for every Australian back yard. Suitably named, the new “Scheedle” success story will be launched at Albury Wodonga Convention Bureau tradeshows stands in both Melbourne and Sydney during the course of 2006.
So, what is a Scheedle?
Exactly that. Half sheep, half poodle.
What is a Scheedle really?
OK. Our version of a Scheedle is really a sheep that has been hand raised in a back yard. The Albury Wodonga Convention Bureau has two healthy and well looked after 4mth old lambs. Prior to AIME, they will be hand clipped into a poodle shape and hence give the appearance of a poodle. A light colouring will be added to their wool using 100% natural food dye (NB: no toxic substances such as paint or hair sprays), to give them a more poodle-like look.
Being hand raised since birth, the lambs are used to human contact and therefore much easier to handle. Our Scheedles are suitably “Albury” and “Wodonga”.
The Scheedle, in practice
The Scheedles will be featured at Albury Wodonga Convention Bureau’s trade stands at AIME in Melbourne on June 6-7 and at Sydney on Sale on July 4-5.
What does the future hold for our Scheedles?
Both Scheedles will continue to be raised by the Conventions Manager during the 2006 Tradeshow Program. However, we are doing our best to ensure their well-being after the conclusion of this program. Contact will be made with various organisations such as secondary school agriculture departments, hobby farms and our local show societies to guarantee that they will continue to be well looked after long into the future.
