The Lunch, sponsored by St Stephen’s Uniting Church, Wodonga and supported by a large number of community groups, provides an opportunity for people and families who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day, to share in the Christmas celebration with others in the community and so to make new friends.

Christmas can be a difficult time for some in the community. The sense of public joy shared by many is not shared by all due to isolation from extended family, bereavement, experiences with illness or depression, or a lack of capacity to celebrate due to financial concerns. In such circumstances Christmas can become the most challenging time of the year. For some Christmas is a time when relationships can be more prone to fracture as a result of such tensions, and these dilemmas can feel more overwhelming than at other times of the year.

St Stephen’s Uniting Church offers this Christmas Dinner with the Community as one way of caring and supporting in these situations.

This is the nineteenth year that the lunch has been offered. Last year about 130 people attended, with the support of a team of 50 volunteers who give their time on Christmas Day to enable this to happen.

Any persons wishing to attend need to register at St Stephen’s Uniting Church, Cnr Beechworth Rd and Nilmar Ave between 9:30am and 12:30pm weekdays or telephone 02 6024 2108.

In addition, we welcome enquiries from interested persons who would be available to volunteer. Registration forms can be obtained from St Stephen’s Uniting Church.

Donations of food, soft drinks, Christmas decorations, Christmas wrapping paper or money would be welcome. Donations can be dropped off at St Stephen’s Uniting Church from Tuesday to Friday 12:30 to 4:00PM.
