Itís Lions Awareness Day this weekend and many volunteers across the country will be out in their community celebrating, including over 100 Lions Clubs who are hosting Clean Up Australia Day events.

The environment is one of Lions’ key global focus areas and Lions Australia CEO Rob Oerlemans says it’s great to see so many clubs participating in Clean Up Australia Day this weekend.

“Many of our Lions members are passionate about nurturing the environment and as an organisation it is one of our key focus areas. It’s great to see so many of our Clubs hosting Clean Up Australia Day events whilst they celebrate Lions Awareness Day this weekend.”

Clean Up Australia Chairman, Pip Kiernan, says it’s never been more important to Step Up to Clean Up, to help protect and conserve local environments.

“This year has seen disruption to our lives, not least of all to our local environments which have been impacted by increased uptake of single-use, disposable items” said Ms Kiernan.

Research reveals* more than 1 in 3 (34%) Australian households self-identified as producing more packaging waste during lockdown periods compared to previous years, and more than 1 in 2 (55%) reported they are now more concerned about product packaging waste than they were in 2019.

“We know Australians everywhere are itching to get involved. Indeed, it’s never been more important to get involved and make a real difference.”

Environmental work is one of the many ways Lions give back and make a difference in the local community.  Some Lions are on a mission to cure childhood cancer and diabetes, others are committed to assisting those impacted by drought and floods and many are simply working together to help people in need in their local community. One thing all Lions have in common is together they are making an incredible difference.

The organisation is encouraging anyone interested in making a diference in the community to consider getting involved in Lions.

“If you see any Lions out in your community this weekend, we encourage you to say hello and get some information on what your local club is up to. If you are interested in making a difference ask your local Lions how you can get involved,” says Rob Oerlemans.

“Our goal is that the demographic makeup of our clubs matches the demography of the community in which they operate.  We’re so proud to have a growing number of speciality clubs across Australia ranging from young Leo clubs, virtual clubs, ethnic clubs, special interest and autism clubs. Whatever your interest, chances are there is a Lions club that can help or others in the community who would be interested in starting one with you.”

Since the first club was formed in Australia almost 75 years ago Lions has grown dramatically in size and impact with over 1300 clubs and 30,000 members now giving back through an array of community-based programs and initiatives.

Over $50 million is donated to Lions Australia each year with all funds going directly to important causes and people in need. Over $5 million is invested in youth programs each year, over $20 million is invested in medical research, $5 million in drug awareness, $20 million in hearing services and over 3000 environmental projects are carried out by Lions Australia every year.

If you support Lions maybe you would be interested in finding out more information on how you can get involved?
