Wodonga Senior Secondary College student and tournament administrator for ESL (Electronic Sports League), Willem Manley, organises a 3-day event in which school students from the area play video games in a team-based and safe environment to encourage inclusivity and diversity.

The Northeast School Esports Championships offers opportunities for high school students to learn key skills such as resilience, leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship and responsibility. Esports and gaming is being used to engage and include students who feel excluded by traditional sporting programs due to physical or non-physical factors.

South Australian Commissioner for Young People Helen Connolly said: “Unlike traditional sports [the students] told me that how good you are at a game doesn’t have to be limited by your physical abilities or social skills or other factors, it is just about how well you play.”

Mr Manley said: “No matter your race, age, sex or size, esports provides an even playing field for all students and can provide great opportunities for cross-cultural collaboration and develops role models for the younger students.”

“There have been a profound lack of extra-curricular activities for school students who are not into sports. Esports will fill this gap and help students reengage with school.”

Wodonga Senior Secondary College is hosting the event and broadcasting the games live in front of a student crowd with some professional commentators alongside the student commentators. Catholic College Wodonga, Xavier High School, Wodonga Middle Years College and Corowa High School will be fielding teams on the days.

“It has been difficult to get the event organised, and I couldn’t have done it without McDonalds Wodonga Homemaker and McDonalds Birralee sponsoring us with much needed funds, as well as HyperX sending us some fantastic gear.”

Mr Manley has been organising the event as an impact project, a Wodonga Senior Secondary College initiative designed to help the community and build the student’s skills in project management and community involvement.

The event is held on the 10th to the 12th of September during the school day and will be broadcasted online via Twitch. Each day, the event starts at 10:30am and finishes at approximately 2:30pm. Monday is the Rocket League tournament, Tuesday is the FIFA 18 tournament, and Wednesday is the League of Legends tournament.
