Local Student Hosts the Border’s First Ever Esport Tournament with Thousands of Viewers

Wodonga Senior Secondary College student Willem Manley, organised a 3-day event in which school students from the area played video games to in a fantastic show of teamwork and sportsmanship.

The Northeast School Esports Championships was a first of its kind for the border and was such a popular event that it will return again next year with even more schools involved.

The Federal Member for Indi Cathy McGowan said: “[The] initiative provides a level playing field and a unique and interesting opportunity for ‘non-sporty’ students to compete.”

Student commentator Kye Antone said: “Normally when you play school sports, it is with a specific group of people, but with esports it gave everyone a chance to come together.”

The purpose of the event was to promote cross cultural and cross age collaboration and break down the barriers that normally stop students from competing in school sports.

Mr Manley said: “It was magical, to see the smiles on everyone’s faces. There was not a single student in the crowd not enjoying the show, and not a single player not having fun.”

Alongside Anna Speedie, the Wodonga Mayor, the Member for Benambra Bill Tilley attended the event and was surprised with what he saw. “I didn’t really know what to expect but what you delivered was a highly entertaining spectacle even for someone like me from the non-gaming world. It was hard not to get caught up in the individual games and the enthusiasm from players and spectators.”

Student participant Isaac Thomson said: “I really enjoyed the event, it gave everyone who doesn’t play sport a chance to be part of a team.”

The tournament was held inside Wodonga Senior Secondary College’s lecture theatre with students from Wodonga Middle Years College, Xavier High Albury, and Corowa High School participating alongside Wodonga Senior’s students. HyperX and the Wodonga McDonalds sponsored the spectacle.

The event was held on the 10th to the 12th of September during the school day and was broadcasted online via Twitch to over a thousand people alongside the large student audience.
