New ThinkUKnow Resources to Boost Online Safety

A new suite of ThinkUKnow resources will provide simple advice for all Australians on how to stay safe and secure online.

Two SOS guides will be released during Stay Smart Online Week to support the 2017 theme ‘simple steps to online safety’, incorporating  practical advice for individuals and businesses to protect themselves online.

The ThinkUKnow SOS Guide to Cyber Safety is designed for parents, carers and teachers. It includes information on what young people SEE, SAY and DO online, the challenges they may face and how they can be overcome.

The ThinkUKnow SOS Guide to Cyber Security is designed for everyday Australians. It provides information on cybercrime, security risks, how to be protect yourself and importantly, how to take action if things go wrong.

ThinkUKnow is a partnership between the AFP, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Microsoft and Datacom, and is delivered in collaboration with all State and Territory police and Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.

More than 600 volunteers from industry and law enforcement deliver ThinkUKnow cyber safety sessions across Australia to address challenges associated with sexting, cyberbullying, online grooming, and privacy.

Since its launch in 2009, more than 67,000 parents, carers, teachers and community members have participated in this initiative.

ThinkUKnow complements the Coalition Governent’s ongoing work to enhance community safety and and better protect young Australian’s online.

In June this year the Government passed Carly’s Law, which targets online predators preparing or planning to cause harm to, procure, or engage in sexual activity with a child. Police used Carly’s Law to charge a man just two months after the law was passed.

Founder and CEO of the Carly Ryan Foundation  Sonya Ryan said that continued communication and connection was important to help create a positive experience online.

“Carly’s story is a reminder that not everyone is who they say they are online. It’s imperative that we educate our children about safe and responsible use of technology to ensure they are protected online.”
