To celebrate the Season of Sculpture across our exhibition spaces, MAMA presents a three part lecture series exploring recent histories of sculpture, key ideas relating to the medium, and ongoing sculptural evolution.

Presented over three sessions, A Brief History of Sculpture will provide a visual understanding of Modernist Sculpture, Sculpture after Duchamp, and Leading Female Sculptors of the 19th, 20th and 21st Centuries.

Morning Lecture: Leading Female Sculptors

Thursday 23 May - 10.15am 11.00am

In the context of current exhibitions by Sarah Goffman, Linda Lees, and Susie Losch, Sophie Holvast will present an overview of the historical and ongoing contribution of pioneering female sculptors to the development of the medium.

Evening Lecture: 20th Century Modernism (but why stop there?)

Thursday 23 May - 6.00pm 7.00pm

An overview of key developments in sculptural practice from 1900 to the sixties(ish), presented by Michael Moran.

Evening Lecture: Sculpture Post Duchamp (from urinals to thin air)

Thursday 30 May - 6.00pm 7.00pm

When a urinal was signed and placed in a gallery, ideas of what constituted an artwork changed irrevocably. From that point on, artists have continued to challenge the sculptural form.
