Wine, Wineries and Breweries
THE SECRET GARDEN AND THE PERFECT WINE
Local Gourmet Produce
Our region received a magnificent gourmet gift when
many Europeans settled here after World War Two.
They brought simply delicious traditions, and many of
the delicatessens, smoke houses, cafés and restaurants
around Albury Wodonga were started by new
Australians who wanted to share their culinary customs.
Freshly picked, freshly made – totally delicious
They also delighted in the fertile countryside here, planting orchards, vegetables and olive
trees, the fruits of which are found in our restaurants and cafés.
Today, you can visit many producers as you tour
around this region, or you can find them all in one
spot at the Hume Murray Farmers’ Market beside the
Gateway Visitor Information Centre. It’s held from
8am to noon every second Saturday (check page
15 for details).
You’ll need a big shopping basket, because there’ll be
tempting displays of fruit and vegetables in season,
aromatic herbs, free range eggs, jars of antipasto,
jams, relishes and sweet treats such as chocolates,
nougat and honey. And on a hot day, just follow the
crowds to the ice-cream stall.

Fine wine and cheese
The region’s traditions of winemaking were born
through the influence of European migrants too, and
a number of small winemakers usually set up their
stalls at the market.
Cheese is another regional specialty, and you can
taste it every day at the Riverina Cheese Shop in
Albury where cheese and yoghurt are made onsite
daily. This is also an excellent place to buy cheese
from other local producers.
And before you tour around our region, do drop into
the Visitor Information Centre to check out the food
and wine festivals and markets.
Rutherglen has a farmers’ market on the second
Sunday of the month, and there are markets in towns
including Beechworth, Yackandandah, the Milawa
Gourmet Region, Bright, Myrtleford and around the
Alpine Valleys. (More details on page 15 and 49.)
Many country towns also feature local produce in their
cafés, or you can visit their producers and sample it
first hand. Bon appétit!
