FUN THINGS TO DO IN ALBURY-WODONGA

  1. Bonegilla Migrant Experience

    The original complex was built as Bonegilla Army Camp during the Second World War. It became the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre in 1947, and until 1971 served as Australia’s largest and longest operating migrant centre. It was the first Australian home for more than 200,000 post war migrants from over 50 countries.

    Block 19 has been assessed by the Australian Heritage Council as having outstanding heritage value to the nation and is included on the National Heritage List.

  2. Lake Hume

    One of the borders most defining features is undoubtedly Lake Hume, keeper of water for irrigation and haven for recreational boaters, skiers, swimmers and anglers.

    Boat ramps can be found at the following locations

    • Bowna Water, Ettamogah, Albury
    • Ebden Reserve, Wodonga
    • Lake Hume Resort, Albury
    • Kookaburra Point
    • Ludlows Reserve
    • The Pines

    A walk along the Hume dam wall is a must do whilst in Albury-Wodonga.

    The wall features a walkway along the top that is safe for children to ride bikes along, offering outstanding views of Lake Hume.

  3. Murray River

    The Murray River is undoubtedly Albury-Wodonga’s biggest attraction.

    Head to the Wodonga Visitor Information Centre for information on the best swimming, fishing and boating locations.

    You can even hire bikes from the VIC and explore the Murray River and Albury-Wodonga on two wheels.

  4. Belvoir Park

    Belvoir Park features a super children’s playground, the Sumsion Gardens and the Off-Leash Dog Park.

    This park is very picturesque and offers a walking track around a large lake with ducks, black swans and geese.

    The playground will have the children entertained for hours with a mass of climbing structures, swings, musical instruments, slides and mirrors.

    The large open space also features public toilets, baby change facilities, shelters and picnic and barbecue facilities.

  5. Huon Hill

    If you’re looking for that ‘wow’ factor on your picnic, head up to Huon Hill and enjoy the superb 360 degree views of Albury-Wodonga, Lake Hume and the snowfields.

    Enjoy bird watching, walking tracks, sightseeing and picnic facilities with several lookouts and information boards to direct you.

  6. Hume and Hovell Walking Track

    Follows the famous footsteps of Hamilton Hume and William Hovell on their exhibition to Port Phillip in 1824.

    The ‘Tunnel Road to Albury’ route of the 440 km track ends in Albury-Wodonga.

  7. Gateway Village

    Gateway Village has something for everyone with HotHouse Theatre, a Jazz Club, the Wodonga Visitor Information Centre and La Maison Cafe located in the same precinct.

    The Hume Murray Farmers’ Market is held every second Saturday between 8am and noon, allowing you to sample the fresh produce and prepared food that is made right on our doorstep.

    You will also find GIGS Fine Art Gallery, Creators’ Artspace and the Woodcrafters Cottage at Gateway Village on the edge of the Murray River.

    The friendly staff at the Wodonga Visitor Information Centre will provide you with ideas and all of the information you need not only for Albury-Wodonga, but the surrounding towns and regions.

  8. Arts Space Wodonga

    A vibrant and accessible contemporary arts venue situated in the central business district of Wodonga.

    It offers an electric program of unique exhibitions, intimate performances, workshops, recitals and forums; featuring local, regional and imported cultural works.

    A showcase of dynamic art works by North East Victorian artists' features regularly; and proposals are welcome from individual artists and organisations.

  9. Bandiana Army Museum

    The Bandiana Army Museum, located just out of Wodonga, is one of the largest and most diversified army museums in Australia.

    There is something to see for everyone and a theatrette that shows a variety of historical films.

    Why not bring some lunch and enjoy the free electric barbeques and plenty of covered seating in the Memorial Gardens.

  10. Hume Murray Farmers’ Market

    Head down to the Hume Murray Farmers’ Market (every second Saturday) between 8am and noon at Gateway Village on the Lincoln Causeway and experience the fresh produce and prepared foods grown and made on our doorstep.

    Meet some of the colourful personalities that grow a diverse range of fruit and vegetable and produce chocolates, nougat, honey, wine, free range eggs, jams, relishes, antipasto jars and even delicious ice-cream.

  11. Wodonga and District Turf Club

    The energy and excitement of the Murray region is captured at the eight race days held annually at the Wodonga and District Turf Club.

    Among the highlights are the Caulfield Cup day races in October, the Wodonga Cup in late-November and the Boxing Day Races.

  12. YMCA Wodonga Sports and Leisure Centre

    The premier indoor family fun and fitness centre in the region.

    Featuring swimming pools, a water slide, spa, sauna, multi-purpose courts, a fully equipped gymnasium, cycle studio, group fitness studio, crèche and health suites.

  13. Wodonga Tennis Centre

    The Wodonga Tennis Centre is one of the largest grass court complexes in Australia.

    Located five minutes from the Wodonga CBD, the Wodonga Tennis Centre has 48 courts in total, with 30 grass, 10 clay and eight synthetic courts.

  14. Libraries

    The Wodonga Library has a packed events calendar catering for all ages.

    Located adjacent to Woodland Grove on Hovell St, the Wodonga Library features public internet access, family/local history research room, microfiche and film readers, in-house board games and jigsaw puzzles and photocopying/ fax facilities.

  15. Woodland Grove

    A picturesque open space right in the heart of Wodonga.

  16. Bicycle paths

    Take a lazy ride around the fantastic bike paths along the Murray and along the causeway from Wodonga to Albury.

    Run, ride or walk on the High Country Rail Trail along the shores of Lake Hume.

    The High Country Rail Trail is one of Australia’s premier rail trails stretching from Wodonga to Tallangatta.
    The 10km of paved track in Willow Park, Wodonga, and the paved path stretching from the Albury Swimming Pool to Sumsion Gardens in Belvoir Park are perfect for roller blading, cycling and riding scooters.

    Wodonga’s Willow Park skate bowl is also great spot for the kids to show off their skills on scooter, skate board, roller blades or BMX.

  17. Aboriginal sites

    Start the Wiradjuri Walkabout from Gateway Island, Lincoln Causeway Wodonga.

  18. Albury Botanical Gardens

    The Albury Botanical Gardens includes over 1000 native and exotic plant species, with many of those existing for 130 years.

    Located on the corner of Dean St and Wodonga Place, Albury.

  19. Golf

    You will find quality golf courses at the Wodonga, Hume Country and Thurgoona Golf Clubs.

    And if you just want to blow out the cobwebs, head to the Albury-Wodonga driving range located just off the Hume freeway on Plunketts Rd, Wodonga.

    Albury-Wodonga boasts the best shopping between Sydney and Melbourne.

    Check out Centro shopping centres in Wodonga, Birallee, Lavington and Albury as well as Myer Centrepoint in Albury.

  22. Albury Art Gallery and Library Museum

    Albury Art Gallery and LibraryMuseum display an ever-changing program of both permanent and touring exhibitions.

    Albury Art Gallery is located on the corner of Kiewa and Swift St Albury and the Library Museum is located at 546 Dean St Albury.

  23. Twin Cities Ten Pin Bowling

    Featuring 14 lanes with state-of-the-art bowling equipment, automatic scoring, pool tables, licensed cafe, league bowling and meeting rooms.

  24. Albury Racecourse

    The annual Albury Gold Cup is held during March each year, drawing crowds of up to 20,000.

    Home to the world’s largest rolling pin, located in the Coles car park on Hovell St Wodonga.

  26. Kinross Woolshed

    Once a large shed used for shearing up to 2,500 sheep, now the shed displays woolly lambs swinging from the rafters and highly original murals decorate the walls.

    Made from soft fabric sewn on boards and covered with plaster, these murals alone are worth a visit to Kinross Woolshed in Thurgoona.

  28. Wodonga’s Heritage Drive

    Discover Wodonga’s history by following the historic markers on the heritage drive.

    There are nine markers, each providing their own piece of history.

    Come to the Wodonga VIC to pick up a brochure.

    While you are out driving, why not stop at Stoneleigh Cottage Built in 1857, it is one of the oldest residences in Wodonga.
